Day 7: Kerry to Clare

Say farewell to Killarney town this morning after a delightful breakfast. Travel to Tarbert ferry through the famous Listowel town in North Kerry well known because of a local man and famous writer, John B Keane. Step out of your luxury vehicle on board the Shannon ferry and take a photo of the Shannon estuary and Killimer village in County Clare on a 30 minute crossing. Your driver guide will drive along the Wild Atlantic coast through the sea side town of Lahinch, famous for surfing and golfing to the 214 metre Cliffs of Moher. Stop at Moher cottage for a coffee or tea with home made scones, relax and view the spectacular Liscannor Bay. Listen to your driver guide share some history about the Cliffs of Moher and Cornelius O’Brien a local politician who built the O’ Brien round tower in 1835 to promote tourism in the area. Walk along the cliff path and view the black and white Puffin birds with the orange beaks nesting on the cliff edge. Look out through the narrow windows in the round tower and see North Kerry to the south and Connemara to the north. Step on board a one hour boat tour to the Cliffs of Moher from Doolin pier and see the Branaunmore sea stack and breathe in the Wild Atlantic sea air. Day 9: Galway

Your driver guide will head out West from Galway city to the picturesque Connemara where the rugged mountains, peat land and mirror like lakes create five star scenic views. Drive through the Maumturk mountains, 702 meters in height and covered in white quartz. Admire the rolling hills with little streams and black faced sheep grazing as your driver guide maneuvers along the winding roads. Stop at the pretty village of Leenane for tea/coffee and home made scones. Travel to Killary harbour and take a photo of Killary Fjord which is 16km long. Next stop will be the historic Kylemore Abbey dating back to 1868 and was originally a hunting lodge. It was built by Mitchel Henry who was a wealthy Businessman and MP for his wife Margaret and their children. Mitchel employed local farmers to reclaim the land at Kylemore and he built a boarding school for the local children. The Benedictine order of nuns were invited to live at Kylemore Abbey in 1920 and they worked in the boarding school. Stroll through the Henry’s home which is now a museum and listen to an audio sharing some history of the Henry family. View the Victorian décor of the upper middle class and wealthy garments worn by the family. Learn also about the tragedy which was to befall Mitchel, his wife and children. Take a shuttle bus to the beautiful gardens where the vegetables were once harvested for lavish parties held by the family in London. Purchase some sauces, chocolates and jams in the gift shop made by the Benedictine nuns. Your professional driver guide will drive along the 16km Sky Road with breath taking views over Clifden Bay, Inisturk and Turbot Islands. Stop in Clifden town for lunch at EJ’s, Mitchels or Guy’s restaurant and taste some delicious seafood including Galway bay oysters. Head out West to the majestic Dingle town which is a hidden gems among the hills and surrounded by Dingle Bay. This bustling town is famous for many reasons, Brian de Staic’s Jewellers, Dingle crystal, Dingle distillery, Kingdom falconry, Foxy John’s hardware store/pub, Dick Mac’s pub where Garth Brooks played a few tunes on his guitar, Fungi the dolphin, Dingle Sea Safari and the Slea Head coastal drive. Stop for a photo at Inch beach enroute to Dingle, one of the most popular beaches in County Kerry. Depart Dingle town after a short tea/coffee break and drive along the inspiring Slea Head drive in the Gaeltacht where the locals speak fluent Irish. You will have the opportunity to hug a baby lamb on a local farm, visit the famine cottages whose owners, the Kavanagh family suffered in 1845 during the famine. Continue to Dunmore head, a Star Wars filming location, Dunquin Pier overlooking the Blasket Islands made famous by such writers as Peig Sayers. Stop at the Blasket visitor centre and experience the state of the art audio visuals which describe the lives of the inhabitants on the islands until 1954. Your driver guide will drive to the oldest church in Ireland known as Gallarus Oratory dating to the 12th century and which is still in great condition.
